You do not need a big garden to give a cat outdoor time. Some of the most-used catios are tiny. Here are ideas for small spaces, and what to check for each.
A window box
A small framed box outside a window gives one cat a sunny lookout. It is cheap and quick, and a good test of whether your cat enjoys being outside.
Check: fixings into the wall structure, sealing around the window frame, shade, and that the window is not a bedroom's emergency exit. Upper-storey boxes need professional review. Window box template.
A corner lean-to
Two house walls meeting at an inside corner give you two sides for free. A small lean-to tucked into the corner needs only two mesh walls and a roof.
Check: vents, meters and downspouts on both walls; the junction with the siding on both sides. Lean-to template.
A tunnel along a fence or wall
A long, narrow mesh run along a fence turns a strip of space no one uses into a walkway. Add a wider section as a lookout.
Check: joints between sections, support along the run, shade and drainage. Tunnel template.
A corner of the porch or deck
If you already have a covered porch or deck, enclosing one corner can be the fastest catio of all.
Check: gaps under boards, around posts and at the ceiling; railings are not cat barriers. Porch and deck template.
A balcony — as a concept first
Balconies attract many city cat owners, but height raises the stakes: falls, guardrails, building fixings, and lease or HOA rules. Use a concept design to plan and discuss it with your landlord or building manager and a professional before building. Balcony concept.
Making small catios great
- Go vertical: shelves at several heights multiply usable space.
- One great view beats a big floor.
- Shade and water, always.
- A hiding spot, even if it is just a box.
Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest useful catio?
A window box big enough for one cat to turn around, lie down and sit up, with a shelf and some shade, can be enough for many cats.
Can I build a catio in a rental?
Often, with permission. Freestanding designs that do not fix to the building are easier to agree and to remove when you move.
Are balcony catios safe?
They can be, but they carry real risks from height and fixings. Treat them as needing professional and landlord review.
