A catio for several cats
Cats who share a home do not always want to share a shelf. A good multi-cat catio gives every cat a way past every other cat — more routes, more resting places and resources that are not all in one corner.
Design moves
- Two ways on and off every high shelf — avoid dead ends where one cat can trap another
- Several resting and hiding places, more than the number of cats
- Water, scratching and litter in more than one place
- Visual barriers so a cat can rest out of sight
- A vestibule if any cat is an escape artist
What the checks do
With more than one cat in the profile, the planner looks for single-route perches, too few resting places and resources concentrated in one spot.

Questions
How big a catio for three cats?
There is no single number; more space and, especially, more vertical routes and resting places reduce tension. Start from the freestanding template and add levels before you add floor area.
