Frequently asked questions
The product
What is OpenCatio3D?
A catio designer: you fit a catio to your home in 3D, check it against safety and welfare rules, and get a build package — materials list, cut list, cost range and steps.
Which catios can I design?
In the beta: lean-to, freestanding, window box and tunnel templates, with porch infill and balcony designs as concept-only. See templates.
Does it work on a phone?
The website and view-only links work on phones. The planner is best on a laptop, desktop or tablet; the iPhone, iPad and Mac app is coming soon.
Does it work in metres?
Yes. Projects can use metric or feet and inches, and you can switch at any time.
Safety and limits
Does a clean check mean my catio is safe?
It means “no issue detected by the current rules”. The rules cover common, documented risks; they cannot see your wall, your local rules or your cats. Read the limitations.
Do I need a permit?
Sometimes. It depends on where you live, the size and height, and whether the catio attaches to the house. Ask your local building department, and check HOA or landlord rules.
Can OpenCatio3D design an elevated or balcony catio?
As a concept. Elevated, roof-mounted, balcony and structurally attached upper-storey designs are flagged for professional review and do not get a build package.
Your data
Where are my designs stored?
In your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Export the project file to back it up.
Can I share a design?
Yes. A view-only link carries the design inside the link itself, so nothing is stored on a server.
Design your catio in your browser
Free to design and check. Fit a catio to your wall, window and yard, run the safety checks, and see the materials list before you buy a single board.
