Plants for a catio, with the evidence showing

Cats chew plants. Every plant here carries a toxicity status from cited sources, a review date and the gaps in what is known. A plant missing from a toxic list is not proof that it is safe.

Catalog reviewed up to 2026-10-12. See sources and send a correction.

How to read a status

  • Known hazard — a reliable source lists the plant as toxic or clinically concerning for cats. Keep it out of the catio and out of reach.
  • Conflicting evidence — sources disagree. Treat with caution.
  • Insufficient data — not enough information. Not recommended where cats can chew it.
  • No known issue found — not listed as a hazard in the sources reviewed. Not a guarantee: any plant can upset a cat’s stomach, and fertilisers, pesticides and soil additives are hazards of their own.
