Catio doors, latches and access

How cats and people get in and out of a catio — cat doors and window access, human doors, latches cats cannot open, self-closers and vestibules.

Doors are where most catio escapes happen: one left ajar, a latch nudged open, a cat slipping past legs carrying a litter tray. Plan them carefully.

Two kinds of access

Cats in and out of the house. Options include an open window into a window box or tunnel, a cat flap in a door or wall, or a cat door kit that fits in a sliding door or window. You should always be able to close it from inside — for storms, nights, or the day a raccoon shows up.

People in and out of the catio. You will need to clean, fix, plant and occasionally retrieve a reluctant cat. Walk-in catios need a human door; small ones need a hatch big enough to reach every corner.

Human doors

  • Size: wide and tall enough to carry a bucket or litter tray in without stooping. 30 in wide by 72 in tall is a common minimum for walk-in catios; OpenCatio3D's templates start there.
  • Framing: a door needs studs on both sides and a header, plus a frame for the leaf that will not sag — a diagonal brace helps.
  • Swing: outward-opening doors keep floor space inside and are harder for a cat to push open from within.

Latches cats cannot open

Cats learn. A simple hook or a gravity latch can be lifted by a determined paw. Better choices:

  • Slide bolts and hasps that need a deliberate movement.
  • Latches at the top of the door, out of reach.
  • A latch on both sides if the door can be closed from inside.
  • A padlock or keyed latch where children or neighbours might open it.

Self-closing doors and vestibules

A door that closes by itself removes the "left ajar" failure. Spring or self-closing hinges, or a simple closer, do the job.

For escape-prone cats, a vestibule — two doors with a small space between them, like an airlock — means only one door is ever open. OpenCatio3D suggests one when a cat profile says escape risk is high.

Checklist

  • Every door latches on its own and cannot be pushed open
  • Doors close by themselves, or there is a vestibule
  • You can reach every corner to clean
  • The cats' entry from the house can be shut from inside
  • Hinges and latches are rated for outdoor use and checked each season

Frequently asked questions

Which way should a catio door open?

Outward-opening doors are common because they save space inside and a cat pushing from inside pushes the door against its stop.

What is a catio vestibule?

A small enclosed entry with two doors, so one is always closed while you pass through. It is useful for cats that dash for doors.

Can I use a pet door into the catio?

Yes — many catios connect to the house through a cat flap or a door kit. Make sure it can be locked from inside.
