Cleaning and maintaining a catio

A simple routine for keeping a catio clean, hygienic and secure — daily checks, seasonal inspections, and designing for easy cleaning from the start.

A catio is outdoors all year. Wood moves, fixings loosen, mesh corrodes and leaves pile up. A light routine keeps it safe and pleasant — and the easiest maintenance is the kind you design for.

Design for cleaning

  • A door you can walk through, or hatches that reach every corner.
  • Surfaces you can wipe or hose: sealed shelves, a paver or deck floor that drains.
  • A litter annex that is ventilated, covered and easy to empty, away from water and food.
  • No unreachable corners behind fixed furniture.

Every visit

  • Look over the latches and doors.
  • Remove waste and refresh water.
  • Check for anything that has blown in: leaves, litter, toxic plants or mushrooms.

Monthly

  • Clean shelves, beds and bowls.
  • Check mesh for loose fixings, bulges or damage.
  • Check plants for pests and anything chewed.

Each season and after storms

  • Go round every edge, joint and corner by hand.
  • Tighten or replace loose screws; check hinges and latches work smoothly.
  • Look for rot where wood meets the ground, and rust on mesh and fixings.
  • Clear mesh roofs of leaves and snow; check roof sheets are secure.
  • Refresh finishes on wood if needed — and keep cats out until they cure.

Cleaning products

Many household cleaners and disinfectants are hazardous to cats. Choose products suitable for use around pets, follow the label, rinse surfaces, and let them dry before cats return.

Keep a record

The OpenCatio3D build package includes a maintenance and first-use checklist; the iPhone, iPad and Mac app will add reminders for latch checks, mesh inspection, roof drainage and finishes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean a catio floor?

It depends on the floor. Pavers and concrete can be swept and hosed; decks can be swept and washed with a pet-suitable cleaner. Let surfaces dry before cats return.

Can I put a litter box in a catio?

Yes, if it is sheltered, ventilated and easy to clean, and away from water and resting places.

How long does a catio last?

That depends on materials, climate and upkeep. Ground-contact rated framing, corrosion-resistant mesh and fixings, and a regular inspection routine help it last.
