Catio shade, heat and weather

Keeping a catio comfortable through the year — shade, overheating, rain, wind, snow and drainage — and which designs need professional review.

A catio is only enjoyable if it is comfortable. Sun is the main attraction and the main risk; rain, wind and snow decide how the structure lasts.

Heat and shade

Cats like warm spots but can overheat, especially older, heavy, flat-faced or unwell cats. A catio in full sun with a clear roof can get much hotter than the shade nearby.

  • Make sure part of the catio is shaded at the hottest time of day. Watch where shadows fall at midday and mid-afternoon in summer.
  • A partial solid roof or shade cloth over a mesh roof gives a cool corner.
  • Keep fresh water in the shade, in a bowl that cannot tip into the mesh.
  • Allow airflow — a catio with solid walls on several sides can trap heat.
  • On very hot days, keep cats indoors.

Rain and wind

  • Give roof sheets enough slope to drain, and send water away from the house wall and the catio floor.
  • Provide a dry corner with a bed or box out of the wind.
  • In exposed or high-wind sites, larger catios need sturdy framing and anchoring. OpenCatio3D flags high-wind regions for professional review.

Snow and cold

  • Snow on a mesh roof is heavy and can sag or tear it. In snowy regions, use a pitched solid roof, brush snow off, or close the catio for winter.
  • Cats may still enjoy cold sunny days with a sheltered, insulated bed — but bring them in when it is very cold.
  • Heavy-snow regions are flagged for professional review in OpenCatio3D.

Drainage and the ground

Water pooling under a catio rots wood and makes floors unpleasant. Grade the ground away, use pavers or gravel under the floor, and keep wood off wet soil or use ground-contact rated lumber.

Seasonal routine

  • Spring: check fixings, mesh and roof after winter; clean gutters near the catio.
  • Summer: shade, water, and heat watch.
  • Autumn: clear leaves from mesh roofs; check latches.
  • Winter: snow off roofs; check for ice on doors and latches.

Frequently asked questions

Can a catio be too hot for my cat?

Yes. A catio in full sun, especially under a clear roof, can get hot. Provide shade and water and bring cats in on very hot days. Ask your veterinarian about cats at higher risk.

Should a catio roof be clear or solid?

Many people combine both: a solid or tinted cover for shade and shelter, and mesh for sun and air. A fully clear roof in strong sun needs shading.

What about snow on a catio?

A mesh roof collects heavy snow. Use a pitched solid roof, clear snow regularly, or close the catio in winter.
